Tullio Inglese ’60 Honored with Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award
“Architecture must transcend materials and methods (technology) and transform sticks and stones into inspiring places in which to work and live.” Excerpt from Tullio Inglese
Architect and educator Tullio Inglese ’60 has been recognized with the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his transformative contributions to ecological architecture and mentorship. The A+ Awards celebrate excellence, impact and legacy and the Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates individuals whose work has shaped the Amherst, MA community and inspired future generations.
Tullio is a principal architect with his firm, TIA Architects, and is the director of the Nacul Center for Ecological Architecture, which he founded in 1972. The term Nacul reflects the merging of nature and culture and is a 501-c3 non-profit organization dedicated to establishing, teaching, and promoting a unified theory of architecture. Over his career, Tullio has mentored more than 600 interns on designs of sustainable buildings, cooperative housing, eco-cities, solar houses, and socially responsible projects.
Born in a remote Italian village and emigrating as WWII refugee, Tullio credits his journey - and the support of his wife Judith and longtime assistant Sandy Sellers – for shaping his life’s work. Tullio’s biography here.
